Sir Thomas
Deane The Deane Family are well remembered in Cork for their eminence as architects and their contribution to the cultural life of the city. Three of them were knighted for their architectural achievements, and many are well known as artists in their own right. Sir Thomas Deane's ancestors were from Aryshire - his Great Grandfather came to Cork via Kinsale where he held the post of Outdoor Customsman. This man's son, David married into the already well established Cork building firm of Kearns and thereafter many of the Deanes descendants joined the architectural profession.
Unusually for those times, Thomas Deane's mother, Elizabeth (nee Sharpe) was very active in the business. She had to take over command of the firm, on the sudden death of her husband, in 1806. At that time she had 5 sons and 3 daughters all under the age of 14. Her eldest son, Thomas, inheriting the business and much property.
